Protests and Anger after Deportation Attempt Leads to ICE Shooting

Febraury 6, 2020 – GRAVESEND, BROOKLYN:

ICE agent shot two unarmed men — one in the face — while executing a warrant on an undocumented immigrant in Brooklyn this morning.

UPDATE: ICE released a statement saying: “A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Fugitive Operations Team discharged at least one firearm in Brooklyn, New York, Thursday morning when officers were physically attacked while attempting to arrest Gasper Avendando-Hernandez, a twice-removed illegal alien from Mexico with a 2011 assault conviction in New York City. “The New York Police Department arrested Avendando-Hernandez Feb. 3 for possession of a forged instrument, a felony criminal charge. ICE attempted to lodge an immigration detainer after his most recent arrest, however the subject was released from local custody before ICE could lodge a detainer. UPDATE:

Group of people have gathered outside Brooklyn Hospital tonight, where the two men who were shot earlier by ICE are being treated. The group is concerned with the presence of ICE agents inside the hospital and vouch to stay to protect the two men. ICE agent shot two unarmed men — one in the face — while executing a warrant on an undocumented immigrant in Brooklyn this morning. Protesters will be back there tomorrow at 6am to assure that victims aren’t taken away by ICE. Various officials and activists spoke at the Press Briefing outside the hospital, including public advocate Jumaane Williams, victims family was also present at the press briefing but did not speak themselves.
